Deb - FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLEBEE

At the time Kay W put out the challenge I was doing an exercise for my painting class that required us to paint to music. One of the pieces of music we were given was "Flight of the Bumblebee". Perfect!
I had fun finding images on the internet and fabrics to fit the theme including the backing fabric - another purchase from the USA a couple of years ago!
Kay H - looks like we had the same great idea!!!

I used a printed fabric of small balloons in the background and blurred them with layers of blue and black tulle. The large balloon is machine appliqued.

Wanting to do a pieced quilt again for this challenge I could not go past good old Flying Geese,however this foundation pieced style of Flying Geese has intrigued me for years  so thought a small quilt was a great way to try it out. Been there, done that, and now there are so many other techniques of Flying Geese still to be tested.

Thank you Kay for the chance to try this technique.

My Other Car by Kay W.

Some years ago when I was teaching at a high school in California my husband gave me a licence plate holder which said "My other Car is a Broomstick".  My students were impressed - and probably believed it! I still have it, but unfortunately it does not fit Australian number plates so it resides on the garage wall.  I thought it was time to take my other car out for a spin!

"Flight of Galahs" stitched by Margie

Based on the traditional 'Birds in the Air' pattern, my little quilt depicts a flight of galahs.

The galahs are pesky, raucous, pink and grey Australian cockies; huge flocks have invaded our local park and take flight en masses when anyone approaches. Machine pieced and hand quilted.

And here is my dad, second from right, at the Adelaide city baths in the 1950s, with friends performing a flight of swallows. On carnival nights they donned clown costumes and became a flight of galahs!

The woven background and touch of orange are to represent sunset as the birds fly home.

Am trying to do different backgrounds in an effort to make my usual applique a little more interesting.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s composition “Flight of the Bumblebee” came to mind with this challenge.
I was brought up in a musical family so I knew this tune very well.

         ..and now I can’t get it out of my head!!
