Thankyou Lorraine for choosing a theme that allowed me to make more suffolk puffs!! The challenge that I set for myself was to make a quilt using pastel fabrics - definitely outside my comfort zone.

Flora, the Bernina Cow!
This one really stretched the little grey cells. Remember "I can't believe it's not butter"? It was a product and advertising campaign by the makers of Flora margarine. I was going to draw a tub of margarine but that seemed a little dull, then one day when I sat down to sew I had an inspiration! One of the background images for wall paper on my Bernina screen is a cow - there is also edelweiss and the alps, very Swiss. So, I thought, I need a cow to say "I can't believe it's not butter." But then it occurred to me that Lorraine uses a Pfaff sewing machine, so just for her Flora corrects herself and says, "I can't believe it's not Bernina."
Sorry, Lorraine. It is a bit round about, but it was fun!

Deb's Garden
To me Flora was the hardest challenge yet! even though the subject was very broad. I pondered over it for ages as I stared out of my sewing room window. Then I realised the answer was staring me right in the face! I went into the garden and picked a leaf off every bush/plant/tree I could see. I then traced around each one and using some hand dyed green fabrics appliqued them to an aubergine coloured background. I did some hand quilting with thread dyed by Heather Ridley. (Leaves used were lemon scented gum, passion fruit, mint, banksias, pine needles, tomato and various other gums.)

"Posy" stitched by Margie for Lorraine
Staying in my comfort zone, again, I chose the traditional log cabin block and used mostly pretty forals from my stash of Liberty fabrics. Machine pieced and hand quilted. Margie.
FLORA for Lorraine. Cheers,Pam
Flora for you Lorraine.
I so enjoyed having a go at this quilt, with my boxes of thread and brightly colored fabric.
The background is a dark purple color eventhough it comes up as blue.
Look forward to the next challenge.
Cheers, everyone!

Challenge Dec-Jan 2012 'Flora'
''Flora' Goddess of flowers, December/January challenge.
I enjoyed the 'broderie perse' technique cutting out little flowers from an array of fabrics and fusing them together to create my fabric picture. Have booked accomodation & airline tickets for the Sydney quilt show in June, so hope at least some of us can meet and check out all of the challenges 'in person'
